Zo schreef hij onder meer boeken over Japanse puzzels als Sudoku en Kakuro. Debuteerde met het prentenboek: ''The Prince and the Witch and the Thief and the Bears'', werd in augustus 2018 gepubliceerd door Walker Books. Het stond op de shortlist voor de Scottish Book Trust Bookbug Picture Book Prize en werd opgenomen in de Bookbug-tassen die aan elk P1-kind in Schotland. Zijn eerste roman: ''Orion Lost'', is een sciencefiction avontuur dat in januari 2020 werd gepubliceerd door Nosy Crow. Het was Blackwell's Kinderboek van de maand en The Times' Kinderboek van de week. Hij heeft verhalen geschreven en interactieve sessies gegeven op basisscholen en andere locaties, en de afgelopen twee jaar heeft hij gewerkt met de Super Power Agency, een liefdadigheidsinstelling in Edinburgh waarvan de vrijwilligers de klaslokalen ingaan om schrijfworkshops en andere projecten uit te voeren en helpen leerlingen te inspireren om hun eigen verhalen te creëren. Alastair woont in Edinburgh, Schotland met zijn vrouw (die aardig is), twee tieners (die lief zijn maar erg luidruchtig), en een kat genaamd Maudie, die tegen hem jankt, ook al zit er duidelijk eten in haar kom.
