Om haar verhaal historisch zo accuraat mogelijk te maken, heeft zij zich zo goed mogelijk verdiept in het bronnenmateriaal. Het boek gaat over de in het Victoriaanse Londen levende Mitchell Lancaster, die samen met vrienden seances begint om aan geld te komen. Hiervoor huren zij een ruimte van de pooier en crimineel William Brooks. Het geld lonkt en Mitchell laat zich overhalen om wat klusjes voor Brooks te doen. Het begint met onschuldig papierwerk, maar het duurt niet lang of er kleeft bloed aan Mitchells handen.
