Ook in het herontdekte De gierige koning kon Bomans zijn rijke fantasie naar hartenlust uitleven. Thé Tjong-Khing aarzelde geen moment toen hem werd gevraagd dit verhaal te illustreren. ‘Het is een grote eer om een onbekend Bomanssprookje van beelden te voorzien, zeker eentje met een donker randje.’ In het sprookje brengt de slotenmakerszoon, niet bang voor de duivel en zijn oude moer, de geschiedenis tot een goed einde. Na de dood van de gierige koning wordt hij koning en trouwt met het meisje dat zich had willen opofferen: ‘... en zij leefden nog lang en gelukkig.’</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
