Natuurlijk, de Japanse wereld is voor ons vreemd, de mensen leven in bepaalde opzichten werkelijk anders dan wij. Maar de inhoud van deze verhalen wordt niet in de eerste plaats door dit anders zijn bepaald. Ze dateren namelijk alle uit de periode van 1910, een periode zoals op de achterzijde van dit boek staat die wordt gekenmerkt door een overheersende oriëntatie op het Westen. Ook in de letterkunde is dat duidelijk te bespeuren. De schrijvers hebben zich meester gemaakt van westerse technieken en genres, waaronder ook de short- story, een genre waarbij het allereerst aankomt op wat de schrijver wil zeggen en derhalve geformuleerd in een zo kernachtig mogelijke uitdrukkingswijze. Bij de keuze van deze moderne verhalen zijn daarom de aantrekkelijkheid van het verhaal, de eigenlijke inhoud en de eigen literaire mérites, van meer waarde geweest dan mogelijke japonaiserie en ook meer dan de belangrijkheid of de literaire reputatie van de schrijver. Dat daarbij deze verhalen naar vorm en inhoud nochtans doordrongen zijn van het Japanse leven van alledag, omdat ze in eerste instantie bestemd waren voor de Japanse lezer, maakt dat ze naast boeiend voor ons ook nog karakteristiek zijn door de confrontatie met een geheel eigen leefwereld.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
